Description
The Review of External Trade Nigeria 1976, published by the Federal Office of Statistics in Lagos, provides a comprehensive statistical analysis and detailed report of Nigeria's international merchandise trade performance for the year 1976, with comparative data primarily spanning from 1972 to 1976. The publication notes an overall expansion in national trade, with the total value of merchandise trade increasing by 38 percent from N8,647 million in 1975 to N11,890.7 million in 1976, driven by growth across domestic exports, re-exports, and imports. Specifically, domestic and total exports rose by 37 percent to N6,742.5 million, heavily dominated by mineral fuels, lubricants, and related materials (crude petroleum), which accounted for 94.4 percent of total exports. Meanwhile, imports grew by 38 percent to reach N5,140.8 million, led by machinery and transport equipment as well as food and live animals. Consequently, Nigeria achieved a visible merchandise trade surplus of N1,609.1 million. The report provides extensive tables and analyses covering the structure of imports by end-use categories, the performance of major primary commodities such as cocoa and palm produce, directional trade distributions involving Commonwealth nations, the E.E.C., and O.A.U. countries, as well as petroleum accounts and balance of payments statements.
