For most parts of tropical Africa, cities were not part of the traditional cultures, and hardly existed until they emerged during colonial limes in response to economic stimuli or administrative needs. Thus developed the maritime cities that began as fishing villages, and the modern towns in the hinterland and which served formerly as mere transportation hubs linking land, river and rail routes. It was within this general pattern that Jos, the setting for this booklet came into existence.
