The principle of inclusion is the bedrock of a democratic society, ensuring that all citizens have equitable access to add their voice in shaping their nation. In Nigeria, systemic barriers disproportionately exclude several interest groups, including the youth, the elderly, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) from participating meaningfully in civic processes. The marginalization of these groups not only undermines their rights but also weakens democratic representation and societal progress. Drawing insights from Global Rights’ fireside dialogues and additional research, this policy brief identifies systemic barriers that these groups face and proposes actionable strategies to foster inclusivity. These recommendations aim to create a robust and representative civic space that empowers all Nigerians, thereby strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
