Abstract
Nigeria on the eve of the first world war; Nigerian abroad - external aspects of the war ; The war and its aftermath ;
Description
This book is not an attempt to rewrite the history of the military operations in the Cameroons and East Africa, in which Nigeria was actively involved, for this has been sufficiently covered by military and official historians of the belligerent powers. A list of such books, monographs and diaries will be found in the bibliography. In spite of this extensive literature, however, very little attention has been paid to the effect of the war on the economic and socio-political development of Nigeria. The little knowledge we possess on the war-time administration of Nigeria is derived from the cursory treatment of it in a chapter in Margery Perham’s Lugard: The Years ofAuthority, 1898-1945.
