Description
I have waited close upon two decades for this singular opportunity to render, at least for the love of truth, a factual inside account of the events and circumstances precipitating the collapse, on Monday the 12th January 1970, of thirty-month-old Biafra. I have elected to delay this long so as to allow sufficient time for tempers to cool, as well as for wounds to heal, on both sides of the fratricidal conflict; and I am delighted that I have not waited in vain after all. Naturally, the underlying theme of this book — of which is titled, THE FALL OF BIAFRA, is the epitome — is centred upon those events and circumstances which represent the ugly backdrop of Biafra's untimely end, and in which I myself was substantially involved. For instance, what were the factors governing our troops' dramatic loss of Aba Province in late 1969: a tragic loss which formed the genesis of our ultimate capitulation? What appropriate measures were taken at the time to forestall a certain disaster? W hat concrete plans were brought to fruition to avert further wanton destruction of lives and property — to check the galloping Federal troops from going on to rampage — shortly after General Ojukwu's nocturnal flight to Ivory Coast? Who exactly made those plans? What results did they achieve and at what price? How was the initial liaison established with the Federal field commanders at Port Harcourt, Benin and Enugu? Who were the emissaries detailed to make those vital contacts?
