This brief study is an attempt at a broad analysis of the emerging themes in the evolution of the coast and hinterland of southeastern Nigeria in the nineteenth century. By ‘Southeastern Nigeria' is accordingly meant the geographical area which may be properly so called within the country as a whole. The area encompassed, subsequent to the imposition of British rule at the beginning of this century, was known as the Eastern Province(s), then as the Eastern Region or Eastern Nigeria. For under a decade (1967-76), the lands of the Cross River basin within the area was called the Southeastern State. But all these appellations are now neither current nor politically relevant. And so, the area might as well resume its appropriate geographical designation in the wider Nigerian context—simply, southeastern Nigeria.
