Description
Of Africa’s eminent explorers, none has been so neglected by posterity as Heinrich Barth. Stanley in Central Africa, Speke and Baker on the Nile, Livingstone in South Central Africa, Park and the Landers on the Niger, Mary Kingsley in West Africa, have all received a large measure of recognition; Barth alone seems to have been ignored. Not a single biography has yet been written in English, and the century since his death has produced barely half a dozen worthwhile commentaries of his African travels
