The aim of this book is to provide a work of synthesis which would serve as a basic university textbook for university teachers and students, as well as an informative reference work for teachers in secondary schools and teacher training colleges, and all interested in Nigerian studies. Given the growing number of scholars working on the history of Nigeria, the Historical Society planned to bring out a book that would be as comprehensive in its coverage of the country, as it was scholarly and authoritative.
