Description
Banking crises which typically result in the failure of banks are a common global phenomenon. Caprio and Klingebiel (2000) shows that between the late 1970s and 1999, there were at least 113 systemic banking crises in 93 countries and 50 nonsystemic crises in 44 countries. Banking crises also featured prominently in the global economic recession of 2008 – 2009; while the on-going problems of the euro zone include significant bank distress in each of the affected countries.
