Abstract

The search for equity and justice in economic independence, social cohesion, national integration, and political stability have been expressed continuously in the convocation of periodic Constitutional and/or National Conferences from the Colonial period to the present.

Attempts at Constitution-making in Nigeria originated from the Instruments for the Amalgamation of the Colony of Lagos and the Protectorates of Southern and Northern Nigeria, in 1914. Chronologically, there are distinct phases in this process with each phase accommodating a number of constitutional developments leading to the gradual involvement of Nigerians in their own governance. The last attempt at such exercises before the present National Conference was the National Political Reform Conference (NPRC) convened by President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration in 2005.
