The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is the federal agency responsible for establishing, managing, and maintaining Nigeria's National Identity Management System (NIMS), including the issuance of the National Identification Number (NIN) to all Nigerian citizens and legal residents. Established by the NIMC Act 2007, the Commission operates a central biometric identity database and is mandated to harmonise existing identification databases across government agencies. The NIN has become the foundational digital identity credential for accessing government services and financial inclusion in Nigeria.
