Abstract
Description
Professor Chinwe Veronica Anunobi, National Librarian and Chairman of the Information for All Programme (IFAP), delivered a goodwill message at a two-day workshop on the impact of safe journalism and gender equality on democratic governance in Nigeria, held from June 13-14, 2023, in Abuja. She emphasized the timeliness of the workshop, given Nigeria's transition to a new leadership and the crucial role of journalism in shaping public discourse, enlightening citizens, and holding officials accountable to the president's promises. Professor Anunobi highlighted that journalists, especially women, often face safety threats that can stifle women's voices and affect the media's watchdog role. The workshop, therefore, aimed to equip journalists, particularly women, with knowledge and strategies to perform their duties courageously while ensuring their safety. She concluded by thanking NATCOM-UNESCO for organizing the event and urged participants to continue the discussion beyond the workshop
