The power of literacy education lies not just in the ability to read and write, but rather in a person's capacity to apply these skills to effectively connect, interpret and discern the intricacies of the world in which he lives. This paper establishes the fact that the empowering potential of literacy education can translate to increasing the three integrated and indivisible dimensions of sustainable development: environmental, economic, and social, in Nigeria. The paper, therefore, concludes that in order to achieve sustainable livelihood in the country, literacy education programmes should, therefore, integrate the three dimensions of sustainable development in its programmes – environmental empowerment, economic development, and social equity.
