dc.descriptionThe Use of English is a compulsory course at Colleges of Education and success in it is a pre-requisite for graduation. However, literature search has shown that proficiency level of pre-service teachers in the Use of English at Colleges of Education in Nigeria is very low. Although researchers have devised various strategies of teaching the course for improvement, the place of formative assessment in enhancing pre-service teachers' proficiency in the course has not been given much focus. Therefore, this paper x-rays the place of formative assessment in enhancing students' proficiency in Use of English in Nigeria's colleges of education
