Exam Cheating & State Control What happened: School exam answers were leaking out too often. The fix: Governor Melford Okilo wanted individual states to take over the exams from the main exam board to stop the cheating. Bendel State Spending What happened: The government of Bendel State was accused of wasting public money. The cause: Critics said they spent recklessly and overpaid for contracts while trying to fund free school and healthcare programmes. Fixing the Tax System What happened: The government was losing a lot of money because people and businesses were avoiding taxes. The fix: Leaders wanted to build a better system to track income and collect taxes fairly, so the country would not rely only on oil money. Saving Nigeria’s Oil What happened: Nigeria was pumping oil out very fast and wasting a lot of natural gas. The fix: Experts called for rules to protect the oil reserves, stop gas wasting, and refine more oil locally instead of just selling raw crude. Nigeria Airways Moving Forward What happened: The government-owned airline was growing fast, buying new planes, and flying to big cities like London and New York. The result: It was a proud moment for the country, though bad management unfortunately ruined the airline years later.
