Lord Lugard was a great British Administrator. Born in 1858, he became a soldier when he was twenty, and served in many countries. he went to Uganda and explored a large area of that Country. on his first visit to Nigeria, Lugard went to bornu in 1894 in the service of the Royal Niger Company, he secured treaties with the kings and Chiefs and raised a local force to protect the Country. In August 1897 he founded the West Africa Frontier Force and commanded it until 1899, when he became the first high commissioner for the Northern Protectorate of Nigeria. In 1912 he negotiated the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates, which in January 1914 became one country, Nigeria. Lugard was the first Governor-General. He guided the affairs of Nigeria until retiring in 1919, Then for fourteen year as British Member of the league of Nation mandate commission, he gave further great services to the British Empire. His book The Dual Mandate' dealing with the duties of European power in Tropical Africa was acclaimed a masterpiece, throughout his life, Lord Lugard retained a strong, and deep affection for Nigeria and all Nigerians.Portrait of Lord Lugard P.C.
