Sir George Taubman Goldie P.C., K.C.M.G., (1846 - 1925) Founder of Nigeria' Goldie was born in 1846. He was a soldier, commissioned in the Royal Engineers. After some years in Egypt he arrived on the Niger in 1877 to explore and look at one of the trading firms in which his family had a financial interest. He realised that Nigeria was a country of immense potential which would come under the influence of one of the major European nations. He resolved Great Britain should be that power. By creating a strong trading company he found a means of accomplishing this and Nigeria joined the Empire. This was enough to write his name in history but Goldie is little known. His wish was that details of his life should remain secret. He destroyed all his records and forbade his family to help in the writing of his biography. He often said It is the work that matters, not the doer', but he will always be remembered as the founder of Nigeria'.Portrait of sir George Taubman Goldie P.C., K. C. M.
